Most commercial solar is grid-tied. But for remote sites, new developments facing long connection lead times, or operations where a reinforcement quote runs into six figures, designing for off-grid — or off-grid-capable — operation can be the better answer. The design discipline is different, and it starts with the load, not the roof.
Start from the load profile, not the array
A grid-tied system can be sized loosely — the grid absorbs the difference. Off-grid has no such buffer. Design starts with half-hourly load data across a full year: the winter evening peak matters far more than the summer average. From that profile we size three things together:
- Generation — enough array to cover consumption in the low-irradiance months, not just annually. UK winter output per kWp is a fraction of summer output, and that ratio drives array size.
- Storage — battery capacity for the site’s autonomy requirement: how many hours or days the site must run without meaningful generation.
- Backup — a generator sized for the residual risk, integrated so it charges the battery efficiently rather than idling at low load.
Generator integration done properly
The generator is not a bolt-on. Integrated with the battery inverters, it runs at an efficient load point, charges the battery in short bursts, and stays off the rest of the time — cutting fuel, noise, and maintenance hours dramatically compared with generator-only sites. Off-grid-capable vs fully off-grid
Many of the best designs keep a grid connection but don’t depend on it. An off-grid-capable system rides through outages, caps the site’s import capacity (avoiding an expensive connection upgrade), and still sells surplus when the grid is there to take it. When off-grid wins
- The DNO’s connection or reinforcement quote is large or slow — compare it against storage-plus-generation before accepting it.
- The site is remote and a new connection means long cable runs.
- Outages are operationally expensive — livestock, refrigeration, welfare facilities.
- Development timelines can’t wait for the grid queue.
